Before I could graduate from Northwest Missouri State College in Maryville, MO with a BS in Education degree in English, I had to student teach. I was assigned to Mr. Lawrence in the spring of 1969. My assignment was to teach the book "Silas Marner" and argued with him that neither students nor I were interested in old literature. Well, I lost this disagreement since money had already been spent on purchasing the paperbacks. I found student teaching (I got a C from Mr. Lawrence) and teaching in general, intimidating and left education for a job in insurance for 34 years. This was a win-win for both education and insurance. I have lived just around the corner from Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence since 2005. They were both so active in Clarinda and will continue to be missed.

Mr. Lawrence is one of the unforgettable teachers in high school I had the honor of being his student. Even though he kept order in his classroom, he did so with the utmost respect. I tried to carry on that same manner in my classroom. What I really appreciate about Mr. Lawrence is that he still kept up with my life when we became Facebook friends. He never missed my birthday. I will miss you, dear Mr. Lawrence. You are so loved by many and have impacted so many students. Thank you, and I will see you again ♡
(I have included a photo of my friends and me in Mr. Lawrence’s class.)

Mr. Lawrence was my 9th grade English teacher. He was a gifted teacher who instilled in me a love of English grammar. He cared for the students and
he kept good order in the classroom for which the students were thankful. He will always be remembered as one of Clarinda’s outstanding teachers. Condolences to his family.

Mr. Lawrence was such an inspirational teacher. He was such a positive role model and made a person excel within the English arena at Clarinda High School. Being from the Class of '74, he supported fellow students through challenges and kind words. A gentle soul! Thank you to a GREAT Teacher!

Clarinda has lost a true champion of its community. I first met Bill when I took over duties as director of Corner Counties Early Childhood Area. He was my board President and such a long standing member. He devoted so many hours to volunteering with various organization. He gave of his time unselfishly and so many benefited from his dedication to the community in which he lived. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. I'm grateful for the time I got to spend with Bill. He was a truly great man.

Mr. Lawrence, one of a kind successful teachers. We had him 2 years in a row in high school which was awesome. Such a great teacher that I still remember what he taught me 60 years ago. That speaks volumes. Had a wonderful visit with him in Omaha when he had his heart surgery. I cherish that memory. Prayers Lisa, Adam and families. He will be missed by all. Such a compassionate, caring man.

Mr. Lawrence, long-time educator, and later Bill as a respected colleague, gave his heart and soul along with necessary discipline to the thousands of students he taught. Being able to have often intense conversations yet end them with mutual respect is a profound memory. He will be missed, but his legacy remains.

Mr. Lawrence was kind to me when I was a new student and felt completely alone and terrified. He saw potential in me that I never saw in myself and always encouraged me. He was basically my first friend when I moved to Iowa. He mentored me and helped me to explore my love of literature. He gave me life advice on many occasions, and it was always something profound. He was an amazing person and teacher. I wish that he knew that I finally made it. I’m completing my masters now and I like to think it’s thanks to teachers like Mr. Lawrence.
