Obituary of Otis Dean Chubick

Otis Dean Chubick was born on August 23, 1933, to Harvey Mearl and Lily May Chubick, on a farm south of Hepburn, Iowa. He was the youngest of nine children.

He attended various country schools and graduated from the eighth grade at Weston #8 near Guss, Iowa. He graduated from the 12th grade at Nodaway Consolidated School in 1950.

He was united in marriage to Phyllis Marie Ridnour of Nodaway on June 14, 1953. Two daughters were born to this union—Jennifer Kay and Julie Mearle. Phyllis passed away on July 27, 1985.

In October 1953, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and spent two years at Fort Carson, Colorado, being discharged with the rank of Sergeant. In 1960, he earned a B.S. in Secondary Education from Northwest Missouri State College, with majors in Social Studies and Business. In 1967, he received an M.S. in Secondary School Administration from the University of Missouri and in 1972 he earned certification as a School Superintendent from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

He started his teaching career in Canon City, Colorado as a classroom instructor and coach. He later served as a guidance counselor at C&M Community School at Massena, Iowa and at New Market Community School. He also served as Jr.-Sr. High Principal at C&M before becoming Superintendent of Schools at Clearfield and Bridgewater-Fontanelle Community Schools. After retiring from Bridgewater-Fontanelle, he served as an interim Superintendent at Lamoni for one year.

On September 28, 1988, he was married to Judy Joy Gould. Upon retirement, they spent summers in Nodaway and winters at their home in Alamo Country Club, Alamo, Texas. In March 2024, they moved to John Knox Retirement Center in Weslaco, Texas.

During his life he was a member of many organizations, including the American Legion, Masons, Eastern Star, and Shrine. He was an emeritus member of the Iowa Association of School Administrators and a member of the American Association of School Administrators. He also served a three-year term on the board at Alamo Country Club.

He was preceded in death by his wife Phyllis; an infant brother Harvey; seven sisters, Della, Clara, Sally, Lola, Peggy, Wilma, and Pearl; and a stepson, Todd Gould.

Survivors include his wife Judy; daughters Jennifer Harm and husband Craig of Tucson, Arizona, and Julie Williams and husband Charles of Fontanelle, Iowa; step-sons Scott Gould and Darrin Gould of Omaha; grandchildren Paige Clayton (Bud), Ryan Williams (Hailey), Steven Harm (Helen), Matthew Harm (Sydney), Stephanie Daake (Matt), Stacie Matchan (Ben), Jordan Eckersley (Megan), Christopher Gould, Brian Gould, Joshua Gould, and Hunter Gould; great-grandchildren Leah and Ava Clayton, Sophia and Alexandra Harm, Mason and Logan Daake, Carter, Cole and Brooklyn Eckersley, and Nova Matchan; sister-in-law Gloria Baldwin, brother-in-law Wayne Wood, and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Following graveside services at Memory Cemetery in New Market, the family invites you to join them for a luncheon and a time of celebrating a life well lived and well-loved at the Nodaway Community Center in Nodaway, Iowa.
