Obituary of Erna Pauline Nothwehr

Erna Pauline (Sunderman) Nothwehr was born December 12, 1920, at home in Bethesda, IA.  She was the third of five children born to Adolph Sunderman and Rosa Fredricke Sophie (Henneman) Sunderman.  Erna Passed away on December 23, 2023, at the Eiler Place in Clarinda IA at the age of 103 years 0 months 11 days.

 

She attended Immanuel Lutheran School for eight years and was confirmed on March 25, 1935, at the age of 14.

 

On August 17, 1941, Harold and Erna were married at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Clarinda. On March 6, 1942, Harold left for the Army. While Harold served in the Army, Erna followed him from base to base in the US, working at various jobs where they were stationed. Harold was transferred to Europe in 1944 and Erna worked at several places until Harold was wounded on February 27, 1945, and returned home from WWII in 1945. They moved north of Yorktown and started farming. They started a family, and two children were born to this union: Darla Kay born April 9, 1946, and Myron Lowell born February 11,

 

1949. Erna and Harold farmed 46 years before retiring in June 1991 to their home in Clarinda. Erna and Harold were active members of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, where they raised their children and brought them up in the Christian faith, which was very important to them. She was active in LWML, Ladies' Aid, and sewing group. She enjoyed playing cards, fishing, cooking, gardening, sewing, crocheting, and her flowers. Erna and Harold looked forward to going to Texas for 16 years during the winter for the warm weather.

 

They celebrated 60 years of marriage on August 17, 2001. On December 31, 2001, Harold passed away to go live with his Lord.

 

Preceding Erna in death were her parents, stepmother Daisy Eickemeyer Sunderman, husband Harold, Infant brother Roy, brother, Lorenz (Beulah) Sunderman, sister, Violet (Richard) Holste and brother-in-law Harold Eitzen.

 

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Darla (Jerry) Fine of Bedford, IA, and Myron (Diane) Nothwehr of Clarinda, IA, grandchildren: Jeffrey (Marci) Fine of Platte City, MO, John (Linda) Fine of Clarinda, 14, Dawnette (Mark) Oliver of Eagan, MI, James (Jennifer) Fine of Clarinda, IA, Todd (Lara) Nothwehr of Clarinda, IA, Kevin (Nashae) Nothwehr of Clarinda, IA, Kristi (Scott) Heuer of Clarinda, IA, grandchildren:  Madysen, Miles, & Mallie of Platte City, MO, Bryce (Morgan) Sunderman of Ankeny, IA Mikaela and Hallie of Clarinda, IA, Kendall Oliver of Eagan, MI, Jasper, Justus, and Jac Fine of Clarinda, IA., Tyler (Mallory) Nothwehr of Shenandoah, Sydnie Nothwehr and friend Matt Bowden of Essex, IA., Cole Nothwehr and friend Dana Cripe of Clarinda, IA., Madison Nothwehr and friend Clay Jordon of Red Oak, Brayden and Elle Nothwehr of Clarinda, IA, Hadley and Haizley Clarinda, IA., sister Marie Eitzen of Clarinda, IA and great-grandchildren, Harper Sunderman of Ankeny, IA, and Waylon and Myla Nothwehr of Shenandoah, IA, Miles Jordan of Red Oak, Kraven Nothwehr of Clarinda along with many other relatives and friends.
