Obituary of Evelyn Salway
Evelyn May Salway, 87, entered into rest in the presence of family on May 28th, 2023, at Azria Health in Clarinda, Iowa.
Evelyn was born on April 8th, 1936, in rural Montgomery County, Iowa to Samuel and Jessie (Fail) Baker. Early in her childhood, the family moved to Washington State, where she attended school on the Colville Indian Reservation. Evelyn’s family ultimately returned to southwest Iowa, settling in Villisca, where she was active in school as class treasurer, yearbook staff, and newspaper editor before graduating from Villisca High School in 1954.
On December 24th, 1955, Evelyn was united in marriage to Lemoyne “Bud” Salway at the Presbyterian Manse in Villisca. The young couple started their family in Des Moines, Iowa, where Evelyn became the mother to two children. The family lived throughout Iowa, Nebraska, and Kansas before ultimately settling in Villisca where Bud and Evelyn created their home.
Evelyn was renowned for her work ethic and ability to hold multiple concurrent jobs while dedicating much of her free time to those she loved. Notably, she spent 42 years working for NSK in Clarinda before retiring in 2018, three months shy of her 82nd birthday.
When Evelyn wasn’t working, she enjoyed spending time with her family, going to the casino, playing bingo, and gardening. During Evelyn’s later years, she took particular pride in her lily garden, which often attracted onlookers during the month of June.
Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Shala (Roy) Scott of Villisca, IA; daughter-in-law and close friend, Ginger Salway of Villisca, IA; grandchildren, Natasha Salway (Doug Cooper) of Villisca, IA, Jessica (Jeff) Calhoon of Clarinda, IA, Nicholas Scott of Ankeny, IA, and Dawson Salway of Clarinda, IA; great-grandchildren, Donavyn Calhoon of Maryville, MO, Adrien Salway of Maryville, MO, Landen Salway of Clarinda, IA, and Treyten Calhoon of Clarinda, IA; as well as many nieces, nephews, and close friends.
